O debate sobre o ensino de Filosofia no Brasil tem se pautado em torno de uma argumentação voltada preponderantemente para a defesa daquilo que pode ser chamado de transmissão da “tradição filosófica ou, de forma mais divergente, o desenvolvimento de habilidade de pensamento. Invariavelmente essas abordagens da filosofia se convertem num exercício retórico reduzindo o filosofar numa arte literária fechada que não ilumina nem dirige a confusão que a criança e o jovem encontram-se imersos em suas experiências de vida. Pretendemos (...) argumentar nesse artigo que a educação filosófica pode ser pensada sob outro patamar, ou seja, estabelecendo como seu objeto primário o campo contínuo, interconectado e conflituoso da experiência de vida. Para desenvolver nossa argumentação tomaremos como referência a compreensão da filosofia como uma atividade de pensamento reflexivo no âmbito social e cultural de valor indispensável uma vez que ela tem a tarefa de pensar os problemas da experiência presente tal como podemos encontrar nas principais obras de John Dewey. A filosofia passa a habitar a experiência gerando e vitalizando os sentidos lógicos, éticos, políticos. (shrink)

Este artigo analisa a concepção de infância como crescimento por meio de um estudo bibliográfico das obras de John Dewey. A condição do crescimento é a potencialidade positiva da imaturidade, interdependência e plasticidade do ser humano. Assim, a vida humana é crescimento como um processo contínuo e interativo de experiência que realiza e renova o poder de pensar, de aprender, da liberdade e da democracia. Infância é este poder de crescimento ou poder da vida.

O objetivo deste trabalho é abordar o problema dos refugiados como atividade filosófica e educacional. A questão colocada para o debate é a seguinte: a filosofia tem algo a dizer acerca dos refugiados? Outra indagação subjacente pode ser expressa desta forma: como preparar um trabalho filosófico-pedagógico de ensino de filosofia com o aluno de graduação tendo em vista a discussão do problema dos refugiados no Ensino Médio? O procedimento filosófico adotado, com apoio na metodologia de caráter bibliográfico, ocupa-se de discutir (...) conceitos referenciados no pensamento de Adorno como forma de penetrar, compreender e buscar alternativas diante dos problemas colocados. Explora-se o conceito de Auschwitz como razão bárbara, experiência anticivilizatória e desumana e a alternativa proposta pelo autor na forma de educação para a emancipação pessoal e social por meio da reflexão e esclarecimento como base para o processo democrático e desbarbarizador. Do ponto de vista do ensino de filosofia a partir de problemas, o texto pretende fazer um percurso-aula na forma de uma caminhada aberta, dialógica e problematizadora. Para isso, utiliza de início uma poesia que alavanca a possibilidade de tratar o conceito refugiado a partir de uma experiência empática de expressão do seu grito no contexto da experiência da barbárie. Na sequência, a caminhada busca explorar os conceitos mencionados caminhando pela leitura do texto de Adorno com relação à educação e democracia. A análise destes conceitos abre novos questionamentos que convidam a continuar a reflexão criando novas experiências de pensar e compartilhar questões relacionadas aos refugiados. Nesta perspectiva, apontamos que a aula pode ser uma experiência de práxis de pensar e repensar problemas e conceitos como processo formativo da consciência crítica, da emancipação e autonomia. O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar o problema epistemológico na obra de Dewey. Abordaremos a crítica aos pressupostos da epistemologia tradicional e sua tentativa de reconstruir uma posição distinta por meio da lógica da investigação. O estudo de caráter filosófico, qualitativo na análise de conceito envolvendo o campo do conhecimento, mostra que este pensador tomou posição crítica diante do que chamou de epistemologia, termo que designa o conjunto de filosofias construídas sobre dualismos como sujeito e objeto, teoria e prática, (...) mente e corpo, espírito e matéria. Tais dualismos surgem da divisão social de classes e servem para a sustentação delas, impedindo a liberdade de criação e comunicação da experiência. Contrapondo-se a este entendimento de epistemologia, Dewey argumenta pela necessidade da lógica como investigação da investigação, ou conhecimento do conhecimento. A contribuição da lógica filosófica da investigação, sua versão da epistemologia, é a de analisar os processos de investigação para abstrair as leis da experiência reflexiva e reorientar o trabalho da filosofia em todas as áreas, inclusive nessa mesma, a lógica. Dewey depreende uma lógica da investigação como processo voltado para a continuidade da vida. O pensamento parte de uma situação indeterminada e culmina na transformação dessa situação por meio de etapas intermediárias de observação, reflexão e ação inteligentemente orientada. A lógica da investigação tem por base a matriz biológica-cultural. Assim, Dewey desenvolve a lógica da experiência que atinge as mais diversas dimensões como a moral, a política e a educação. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar o processo de criação de material para ensino de filosofia para crianças. A produção é resultado das atividades de grupo de pesquisa. O trabalho adotou como referencial a concepção de democracia como modo de vida ético e político e suas relações com a educação a partir do pensamento de Dewey e Lipman. Nesta perspectiva, o modo de vida democrático se consubstancia no agir guiado por valores éticos e no exercício político. A atitude filosófica é (...) entendida como uma prática educativa na e para a democracia. O principal resultado é a criação de uma narrativa filosófica sobre democracia para crianças a partir da linguagem metafórica. A metáfora criada para ambientar o conceito de democracia está ancorada na experiência da casa habitada por personagens conceituais relacionados à democracia como liberdade, justiça, poder, direitos, voto e educação. Resumo: Este trabalho analisa a recepção do paradigma de ensino de filosofia de Matthew Lipman no Brasil e sua contribuição para a constituição de um campo de investigação de ensino de filosofia. O conceito de paradigma de Thomas Kuhn (2006) serve de base para caracterizar a concepção de filosofia para criança de Lipman como iniciadora de um campo de investigação sobre ensino de filosofia. A recepção do paradigma de Lipman no Brasil iniciou pelo campo escolar a partir da década de (...) 1990 e passou a ser estudado academicamente por meio de pesquisas de mestrado e doutorado, sobretudo, nas duas primeiras décadas deste século. Este estudo se concentra na análise destas produções buscando compreender as apropriações das concepções de Lipman, as críticas e as possíveis influências no movimento nacional de constituição de um campo científico denominado Ensino de Filosofia. Em termos metodológico, a pesquisa é de natureza bibliográfica, com abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa que orientam o levantamento e análise da produção acadêmica de dissertações e teses sobre o paradigma de Lipman. Como resultado, a pesquisa encontrou substantiva quantidade (102) e qualidade de produções justificando a contribuição do paradigma de Lipman para a constituição do campo de investigação de ensino de filosofia. Thomas Kuhn's concept of paradigm serves as a basis for characterizing Lipman's conception of philosophy for children as the initiator of a field of investigation on philosophy teaching. The reception of Lipman's paradigm in Brazil began in the school field in the 1990s and began to be studied academically through master's and doctoral research, especially in the first two decades of this century. This study focuses on the analysis of these productions, seeking to understand the appropriations of Lipman's conceptions, the criticisms and possible influences on the national movement for the constitution of a scientific field called Philosophy Teaching. In methodological terms, the research is of a bibliographic nature, with a quantitative and qualitative approach that guide the survey and analysis of the academic production of dissertations and theses on Lipman's paradigm. As a result, the research found substantial quantity (102) and quality of productions justifying the contribution of Lipman's paradigm to the constitution of the field of investigation of teaching philosophy. Este artigo tem por objetivo relatar a experiência com o Projeto de educação filosófica denominado Ética e Educação para o Pensar a partir da Literatura Infantil, abordando a história da sua criação, algumas referências teóricas e metodológicas, a estrutura do projeto e o desenvolvimento através de parceria entre o Instituto Sadia, Fundação Sidónio Muralha, Instituto de Filosofia e Educação para o Pensar e seis secretarias de educação. O foco do projeto é a educação ética através da comunidade de investigação, enfatizando (...) a abordagem dialógica dos valores, procurando trabalhar na direção da autonomia moral e cognitiva das crianças. O projeto foi desenvolvido com professores e alunos da Educação Infantil e Ensino Fundamental I. No final do artigo são apresentadas algumas produções dos alunos desenvolvidas como parte do projeto e depoimentos dos professores sobre o mesmo. (shrink)

This research seeks to understand the relationship between philosophy and the formation of concepts in childhood from the perspective of Matthew Lipman. As our own research in the area of philosophy of education, we pose the following question as a problem to be analyzed: how can philosophy contribute to the concept formation process in childhood according to Lipman? The development of this problem was organized in five stages. A first seeks to understand and deepen Lipman's conception of Philosophy for Children, (...) especially the idea of thinking skills and philosophical dialogue in the research community; the second stage consisted of planning philosophical practice with the children at school, in a class with 32 students from the 3rd year of elementary school in a public school in the city of Londrina / PR, in the period of one semester; the third was to carry out the classroom experience with the students and the teacher from the previous stages; the fourth step was the evaluation of the practice and the planning of the following classes after each meeting; and the fifth stage was concerned with the registration, analysis and systematization of the observed. In order to investigate the contribution of philosophy to the concept formation process in childhood, according to Lipman, part of the research methodology was qualitative, analyzing the concepts of philosophy, thinking and the research community of this philosopher. For this, his main works and those of his commentators were consulted. Action research procedures were also employed through the practice of students from Elementary School I, in order to carry out an experience of the analyzed concepts. As a result of the research, it is possible to highlight the fundamental role of Lipman’s Philosophy for Children in the formation of concepts, because, through philosophical practices, the children were more reflective in approaching concepts that in their daily lives could go unnoticed. The work of questioning and dialogue in the research community made it possible to highlight the difficulty of conceptualizing at the beginning of the work, the progress along their approach and the need to seek more in-depth answers. With that, it can be highlighted that the Philosophy classes contributed to such advances and that without them the skills would remain stagnant. This study is added to the philosophical educational movement of teaching philosophy from childhood, which is considered essential for the formation of more reasonable subjects, and most importantly, with the acquisition of skills that will facilitate life in and out of school. Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a noção do Ubuntu como contribuição para pensar a democracia, especialmente a crise que esta enfrenta, no Brasil, da atual realidade histórica de intolerância, discriminação racial, exclusão social e desumanização. Para isso, levanta-se a seguinte questão: pode a África contribuir para o pensamento da democracia, pela sua filosofia de vida expressa em Ubuntu? A primeira parte do texto analisa o conceito de Ubuntu, destacando seu caráter filosófico. A segunda parte desenvolve duas características estruturais (...) do Ubuntu: a comunidade e a tolerância. A metodologia de pesquisa se caracteriza como um trabalho bibliográfico, cujo aporte é a análise filosófica da expressão Ubuntu, fundamentada no modo de vida africano, a partir das obras de Ramose: African Philosophy Through Ubuntu ; de Gyekye: Person and Community in African Thought. Entende-se que compreender Ubuntu como um modo de vida africano, baseado na interdependência, interconstituição, interconexão e inter-humanização é cooperar para pensar a democracia como modo de vida ético, social e político, o qual reconhece e considera o outro como sujeito de diferenças que possibilitam a humanização.: This study aims at analysing the notion of Ubuntu as a contribution to think about democracy, especially the crisis it faces in Brazil, before the current historical reality of intolerance, racial discrimination, social exclusion, and dehumanization. For this reason, we raise the following question: can Africa contribute to think about democracy through her life’s philosophy expressed in Ubuntu? The first part of the text analyses the concept of Ubuntu, highlighting its philosophical character. The second part develops two structural characteristics of Ubuntu: community and tolerance. The research methodology is characterised as a bibliographical work, whose contribution is a philosophical analysis of the expression Ubuntu, based on the African way of life, from the works of Ramose: African Philosophy Through Ubuntu ; of Gyekye: Person and community in African thought. We defend that understanding Ubuntu as an African way of life, based on interdependence, inter-constitution, interconnection and inter-humanisation is to contribute to think about democracy as an ethical, social and political way of life that recognises and considers the other as individual of differences that make humanisation possible. I’m to push back on Hill’s (2022) criticism in four ways. First: we need some context for the debate that occurred in the pages of the Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective that so concerns Hill. Second: getting precise with our terminology (and not working with stereotypes) is the only theoretically fruitful way to approach the problem of conspiracy theories. Third: I address Hill’s claim there is no evidence George W. Bush or Tony Blair accused their critics, during the build-up (...) the invasion of Iraq in 2003ACE, as being “conspiracy theorists.” Fourth (and finally): I will gently suggest that Hill has succumbed to a stereotypical view of work in Philosophy on conspiracy theories. The early decades of the last century saw European philosophical thought becoming increasingly interested in the sociological extension of the idea of law. From the viewpoint of the sociology of law, law is formed in the process of social interactions and is not sanctioned by the state. Sergey Hessen and Georges Gurvitch base their conceptions of social law on the sociology of law in the 1920s and 1930s. They start a polemic in the pages of the journal Sovremenniye zapiski. Although (...) they differ radically in their definitions of the status of the state they concur in defining society as a set of social institutions and communities existing as instruments for expressing personal freedom. The social regulations they propose are already legal situations. Hessen and Gurvitch believe that the individual can fully exercise his/her freedom only in conditions of such legal pluralism. However, the concept of legal pluralism involves an inherent problem of preserving social unity: why is it that society does not fall into a range of autonomous social entities, each offering the individual its own legal order for actualising freedom? To solve this problem the philosophers use the concept of “the general will”. General will is an instrument of correlation between individual freedom and the development of society and culture as a whole. The object of philosophical dispute is how the general will is formed: 1) in the process of social self-organisation according to Gurvitch; 2) in the operation of the suprafunctional organisation according to Hessen. The difference in the grounding of the general will leads to a difference in the concepts of social unity: 1) sobornost according to Gurvitch and 2) solidarity according to Hessen. Analysis of the dispute between Gurvitch and Hessen brings out not only the differences in the interpretation of social unity but also the fundamental problems with the conceptions of social law. This paper examines the structure of moral responsibility for outcomes. A central feature of the analysis is a condition that we term the ‘avoidance potential’, which gives precision to the idea that moral responsibility implies a reasonable demand that an agent should have acted otherwise. We show how our theory can allocate moral responsibility to individuals in complex collective action problems, an issue that sometimes goes by the name of ‘the problem of many hands’. That brings me to the crux of my disagreement with Hillis Miller. The central contention is not simply that I am sometimes, or always, wrong in my interpretation, but instead that I—like other traditional historians—can never be right in my interpretation. For Miller assents to Nietzsche's challenge of "the concept of 'rightness' in interpretation," and to Nietzsche's assertion that "the same text authorizes innumerable interpretations : there is no 'correct' interpretation."1 Nietzsche's views of interpretation, as Miller says, are relevant to (...) the recent deconstructive theorists, including Jacques Derrida and himself, who have "reinterpreted Nietzsche" or have written "directly or indirectly under his aegis." He goes on to quote a number of statements from Nietzsche's The Will to Power to the effect, as Miller puts it, "that reading is never the objective identifying of a sense but the importation of meaning into a text which had no meaning 'in itself.'" For example: "Ultimately, man finds in things nothing but what he himself has imported into them." "In fact interpretation is itself a means of becoming master of something."2 On the face of it, such sweeping deconstructive claims might suggest those of Lewis Carroll's linguistic philosopher, who asserted that meaning is imported into a text by the interpreter's will to power: "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things.""The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all." But of course I don't believe that such deconstructive claims are, in Humpty Dumpty fashion, simply dogmatic assertions. Instead, they are conclusions which are derived from particular linguistic premises. I want, in the time remaining, to present what I make out to be the elected linguistic premises, first of Jacques Derrida, then of Hillis Miller, in the confidence that if I misinterpret these theories, my errors will soon be challenged and corrected. Let me eliminate suspense by saying at the beginning that I don't think that their radically skeptical conclusions from these premises are wrong. The use of genetic testing and neuroscientific evidence in legal trials raises several issues. Often their interpretation is controversial: the same evidence can be used to sustain both the prosecution’s and defense’s argument. A recent Italian case confirms such concerns and stresses other relevant related questions.

The term ‘manipulation’ is frequently employed but rarely discussed or defined in psychiatric circles. This paper reviews previous conceptual analyses of the term by philosophers and psychiatrists, and examines its use in ordinary discourse. A series of characteristics which comprise the conceptual core of the term when it is unambiguously applied in interpersonal settings are proposed. Manipulation is contrasted with other behavior control methods such as rational persuasion and coercion, with emphasis on the role played by deception and the communicative (...) context in which the manipulative transaction occurs. It is argued that manipulative behavior is fundamentally intentional, and the usefulness of the concept of ‘unconscious manipulation’ is questioned. Though the proposal that Manipulative Personality Disorder be formally recognized as a new diagnostic category is rejected, it is urged that the concept of manipulation receive wider attention and discussion within the mental health community. There is not just a desire but a profound human need for enhancement - the irrepressible yearning to become better than ourselves. Today, enhancement is often conceived of in terms of biotechnical intervention: genetic modification, prostheses, implants, drug therapy - even mind uploading. The theme of this book is an ancient form of enhancement: a physical upgrade that involves ethical practices of self-realization. It has been called 'angelification' - a transformation by which people become angels. The parallel process is 'daimonification', (...) or becoming daimones. Ranging in time from Hesiod and Empedocles through Plato and Origen to Plotinus and Christian gnostics, this book explores not only how these two forms of posthuman transformation are related, but also how they connect and chasten modern visions of transhumanist enhancement which generally lack a robust account of moral improvement. What makes the words we speak mean what they do? Possible-worlds semantics articulates the view that the meanings of words contribute to determining, for each sentence, which possible worlds would make the sentence true, and which would make it false. M. J. Cresswell argues that the non-semantic facts on which such semantic facts supervene are facts about the causal interactions between the linguistic behaviour of speakers and the facts in the world that they are speaking about, and that the kind (...) of causation involved is best analysed using David Lewis's account of causation in terms of counterfactuals. Although philosophers have worked on the question of the connection between meaning and linguistic behaviour, it has mostly been without regard to the work done in possible-world semantics and Language in the World is a book-length examination of this problem. In this unusual and much-needed reappraisal of Freud's clinical technique, M. Guy Thompson challenges the conventional notion that psychoanalysis promotes relief from suffering and replaces it with a more radical assertion, that psychoanalysis seeks to mend our relationship with the real that has been fractured by our avoidance of the same. Thompson suggests that, while avoiding reality may help to relieve our experience of suffering, this short-term solution inevitably leads to a split in our existence. M. Guy Thompson forcefully disagrees (...) with the recent trend that dismisses Freud as an historical figure who is out of step with the times. He argues, instead, for a return to the forgotten Freud, a man inherently philosophical and rooted in a Greek preoccupation with the nature of truth, ethics, the purpose of life and our relationship with reality. Thompson's argument is situated in a stunning re-reading of Freud's technical papers, including a new evaluation of his analyses of Dora and the Rat Man in the context of Heidegger's understanding of truth. In this remarkable examination of Freud's technical recommendations, M. Guy Thompson explains how psychoanalysis was originally designed to re-acquaint us with realities we had abandoned by encountering them in the contest of the analytic experience. This provocative examination of Freud's conception of psychoanalysis reveals a more personal Freud than we had previously supposed, one that is more humanistic and real. (shrink)

Realities are structured categorially, and comprehension of our internal and external conditions do not appear to be global or unitary. Rather, both human and non human animals function within their worlds and understand these by categorizing their experiences. Drawing upon many areas of life, the authors consider the ontological, mereological and multi-faceted structure of experience to explore how an understanding of categories can further knowledge.

Within the moral/social order maintained and reproduced by biomedical ethics (i.e., the “peaceable community”), suffering is a senseless accident with no value. Insofar as suffering compromises the fundamental pillar of this order, namely, autonomy, it threatens the existence of the “peaceable community”. Consequently, biomedical ethics is only able to offer those who suffer one moral or practical response: that of elimination, embodied most vividly in the increasingly approved practice of assisted-suicide. Another moral/ social order, however, the “peaceable Kingdom” or the (...) “Body of Christ”, provides an alternative understanding of the meaning, purpose, and significance of suffering, through the Roman Catholic sacrament of anointing of the sick. Recognizing the power of sickness and suffering to “dis-inscribe” bodies of their normative self-understandings, the Church responds with a set of liturgical practices which intend to respond to the dynamics of suffering, re-inscribe these bodies, and assist persons in fulfilling the vocation of “participating in Christ's suffering for the salvation of the world”.
